4 Things You Should Know Before Investing in Professional Development
When school districts invest in professional development (PD) for the instructional staff, district personnel should make sure it adheres to these standards:
 
1. It must support broader educational improvement efforts.
PD serves as a bridge between current and improved practices by building on teachers’ strengths and addressing their weakness. Therefore, teachers’ learning needs must be assessed first, and then matched with the appropriate professional development activities.
 
2. It must target teachers’ knowledge of content and subject-specific instructional methods.
Research shows that PD often concentrates on generic teaching behaviors rather than on content knowledge (even though the latter has proven to be more effective). Teachers need opportunities to expand and refine their subject matter knowledge and subject-specific teaching methods, so verify PD content reflects this.
