The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Energy Star
program offers a proven strategy for superior energy management
with tools and resources to help each step of the way.
In addition to cost savings, better energy efficiency means lower emissions and a healthier environment. The EPA estimates the program has helped businesses, K-12 schools, state and local governments, colleges, and consumers save more than $8 billion in energy costs, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 18 million cars.
Buildings that earn an Energy Star (R) prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA.

The Cash Flow Opportunity Calculator
The EPA's Cash Flow Opportunity (CFO) Calculator, a spreadsheet developed by Energy Star, helps you take a practical look at your current energy efficiency situation and the improvement opportunities that are available.
The CFO Calculator addresses three critical questions about energy efficiency projects:
- How much new energy efficiency equipment can be purchased from the anticipated savings?
- Should this equipment purchase be financed now or is it better to wait and use cash from a future budget?
- Is money being lost by waiting for a lower interest rate?
The CFO Calculator can help you decide whether your potential energy
savings justify investing in a detailed energy audit. A high-level
energy audit performed by a qualified service provider can reveal your
exact energy and dollar savings; many organizations are surprised to
learn how much new equipment is actually "buried" in their current
utility bill.

Using graphs and tables, the CFO Calculator is written in lay terms so that managers who are not financial specialists can use it to make informed decisions, yet it’s sophisticated enough to satisfy financial decision-makers.
The CFO Calculator addresses the myths that paying cash or going for the lowest interest rate are always the best financial decisions.

spreadsheet as a Microsoft Excel file (415K file).
You can choose to enter either:
(A) estimates of how your building currently operates and the possible
improvements, or
(B) data generated when you use the energy performance rating system in
EPA's Portfolio Manager.
Either way, the CFO Calculator provides answers to some critical
financial questions in just minutes.
