At ASBO International, we believe in embracing our
responsibility to people and to the planet, and are doing what we can to
minimize our negative impact and maximize our positive. 2012 marks
the fourth year of ASBO International’s efforts to create
awareness about what we as individuals and organizations can do to
contribute to society while simultaneously strengthening the school
business management profession. Here are just a few highlights of the
actions we’re taking to live our sustainability
commitment.
What is ASBO International doing?
For the Community:
ASBO International Board of Directors Build-a-Bike At the February 2011 ASBO International Board of
Directors Meeting, your Board of Directors participated in a
teambuilding activity that entailed building bicycles that would later
be donated to the children of Jonathan’s Place, a Dallas area
non-profit that works to give abused and neglected children the chance
to be children. Since 1994, Jonathan’s Place has been taking care
of the youngest members of the Dallas community that have suffered the
trauma of abuse. Jonathan’s Place is an emergency shelter for
abused, abandoned and neglected children, age newborn to 17 years. It is
the only licensed emergency shelter in the area that serves children
under the age of 10.
Positive Impact Program at the Annual Meeting Volunteerism
has risen dramatically across America with the President’s call to
service, but donating time, money, and expertise has been a longtime
ASBO tradition. Positive Impact Program projects, designed to give
back to our Annual Meeting host city and its citizens in need, are great
examples of service in action. In 2011, Positive Impact Program
participants volunteered at Northwest Harvest, Washington
State’s first food bank distribution center to focus on fresh
produce. In just one afternoon, participants packaged enough food
to feed 3,000 families. Planning for the 2012 Positive Impact
Program is underway. Plan to join us on Monday, October 15 in Phoenix,
AZ.

Gift of Butterflies
Program ASBO’s Gift of Butterflies
program seeks to provide underprivileged
students in the host city of the ASBO Annual Meeting with the school
supplies and support they need to start the school year ready and
excited to learn—with butterflies in their stomachs. The 2011
donation initiative, which garnered $63,000 in school supplies,
furniture, and financial support, was the most successful to date,
topping the donations of $27,000 in 2009 and nearly $50,000 in 2010. The
success of the program is due to the efforts of American Fidelity
Assurance Company, AXA Equitable, E & I Cooperative Purchasing, GOJO
Industries, Home Depot, SchoolDude.com, Quill.com, SAS Institute,
Staples Advantage, Tyler Technologies, Virco Mfg. Corporation and all
the corporate partners, exhibitors, and individuals who contributed
anonymously. Help us raise the bar in 2012.

For the Environment:
Meeting Site and Vendor Selection ASBO leadership
purposefully selects meeting sites and vendors with commitments to green
and otherwise socially responsible practices.
Minimizing Our Environmental Footprint ASBO International
is committed to hosting “paper-lite” meetings, using paper
only where absolutely necessary. We’ve completely eliminated the
use of disposable cups, plates, and utensils, and provide all attendees
with reusable water bottles. In addition, we select badge holders and
conference bags made from recycled or sustainable materials. To increase
recycling and repurposing of exhibit hall materials, we ask exhibitors
to sort unwanted items into bins labeled “Trash,”
“Recycle,” and “Donate.”
Indoor Environmental Quality Advisory Group Thanks to a
grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ASBO International
offers free services for schools from our Indoor Environmental Quality
(IEQ) Advisory Group. The IEQ Advisory
Group will work with you to provide consultative solutions to address
IEQ concerns, educate and train staff on IEQ issues, and develop and
implement effective IEQ management programs. Effective IEQ management
can provide a healthy indoor environment conducive to learning, student
and teacher health, higher attendance, and increased school funding
through positive community support.
Continuing Education ASBO International strives to offer a
range of education sessions and speakers who demonstrate the role
sustainability plays in almost every functional area of an organization.
Look for ASBO's SR icon in the Annual Meeting program book to identify
sessions that speak to issues of social responsibility.
