ASBO International Publishes New Professional Standards and Code of Ethics for School Business Leaders (April 12, 2006)
The Association of School Business Officials
International (ASBO) has released the International School Business
Management Professional Standards and Code of Ethics, which details
nearly 200 professional standards and a 28-point Ethical Code that
encompasses Standards, Conduct, and Expectations of Personal and
Professional Integrity.
With increased awareness of the relationship between school business
practices and the quality of education and student performance, the
public and key stakeholders are focusing now more than ever on the
school business official. In this new climate of accountability for
student outcomes, there has been intense scrutiny of educational funding
and resources. To meet these challenges and ensure every student
receives the necessary resources to succeed, school districts need
solidly established business and financial operating systems led by
effective school business officials.
ASBO has developed and shared school business official standards for
nearly five decades, and this publication marks the culmination of their
expertise. It combines the knowledge base of highly trained and
well-recognized school business officials with time-tested best
practices. This document, the first of its kind in scope, is a major
contribution to the field because it offers internationally benchmarked
guidelines for business officials to draw upon in their daily work.
These guidelines will help inform the work of thousands of school
business officials who oversee resource allocations that impact a
student's daily life.
"Now more than ever, the role of the school business official is crucial
to the success of schools, and by extension, the success of students,"
according to ASBO Board of Directors President Melody E. Douglas. "These
professional standards and code of ethics are a constant reminder of the
importance of what we do."
