National Performance Management Advisory Commission (July 8, 2010)

In today’s global society, organizations are expected to respond to customer demand. Top-performing public school systems recognize that performance management is essential to drive excellence into the workplace as well as the culture of the organization.

Recognizing the significance of the role of performance management in the public sector, ASBO International and 10 other public interest organizations formed the National Performance Management Advisory Commission. ASBO collaborated with these organization to develop a comprehensive national framework for public sector performance management.

The framework articulates principles and describes practices for use by all state, provincial, and local governments. The commission’s intent was that the framework:
  • Be flexible and readily adaptable to varying circumstances
  • Identify general approaches, practices, and techniques that are characteristic of successful performance management
  • Support state, provincial and local governments’ efforts to develop and assess their performance measurement and management systems, for the public’s benefit.

Special thanks to ASBO member Lee V. Legutko who volunteered to represent the school business official perspective on this project.
